Widening the Nostrils
Serving New York City In Manhattan And Surrounding Areas
Do you have extremely narrow nostrils compared to the shape of the rest of your nose? At his Manhattan nasal surgery clinic, CosMedica, Dr. Bellin can perform revision nose surgery to correct the problem. There may be a couple of possible reasons for it:
- It could simply be a family trait that others before you have had to live with
- It could be the result of a pooly done alarplasty
Alarplasty is the surgery performed to narrow the nostrils. If your nose surgeon removed too much of the outer base of your nostrils, it would have caused this problem for you.
The Solution
It involves removing a wedge of cartilage from the rims of your ears and grafting them to the base of each of your nostrils to widen and raise them. The portions of cartilage removed from your ears will not be noticeable. The ear cartilage is used because it has a similar texture. Depending on the nature of a specific procedure, your doctor may also graft cartilage or bone from other areas of your body.
Will Insurance Cover Your Surgery?
While rhinoplasty is considered an elective and cosmetic procedure, the same principles apply as they would for any other type of conventional and necessary surgery. Your surgeon must have full knowledge of any health issues that could affect your candidacy for a nose job.
In some cases, rhinoplasty is a required surgery for health reasons and may qualify for at least partial insurance coverage. Perhaps your nostrils are the result of a family trait and the surgery would be elective, and therefore not covered. Or you may have been the victim of an injury that caused a blockage from cartilage in one nostril or the other.
This combination would likely require two procedures to be corrected properly.
- Widening your nostrils for cosmetic reasons;
- Correcting a deviated septum for medical reasons to cure difficulty in breathing. This may be covered by your insurance carrier.
The widening of the nostrils would be performed at the same time as reconstructing the deviated septum and you may be able to get a good portion of your surgery paid for. You could save money by having only one surgical time, one anesthesia, and a general double-use of all the related services.
If you feel you might be a candidate for this primary and secondary nasal surgery, do not hesitate to discuss it with Dr. Bellin during your consultation. If insurance coverage is a possibility, you will need to contact your insurance company and obtain pre-authorization before your rhinoplasty is performed.
Here are some links to other cosmetic surgeries that may be partially covered by insurance if they affect your health in some way:

- Poor Results From Your Previous Rhinoplasty
Something to Consider
If your narrow nostrils are an inherited trait that has always run in your family, it would be a good idea to give your nose job careful thought before going through with it. You may want to prepare yourself for adverse reactions from members of your family who are disappointed or offended by your actions.
Your Decision
Nasal surgery is an elective procedure that must be the choice of the individual considering it. It is your decision to make and you are the one who will be most effected by the outcome. Be sure it is what you want for yourself, as it is your life and your appearance. Other people’s opinions do not matter and should not be an influencing factor.
