What to Expect After Your Breast Augmentation

Manhattan, NYC, New York

Dr. Bellin will discuss with you what to expect after your breast augmentation surgery or any other plastic surgery in NY, and give you detailed post-operative instructions. Here are a few things to expect after your procedure:

Pain – Most women describe the pain after breast augmentation as mild to moderate if the implants are over the muscle. If you have subpectoral placement, your recovery will be much more painful and will require at least a week of immobility and narcotic painkillers. Take pain medication as prescribed, and Tylenol or other mild analgesics if necessary. The pain will diminish rapidly over the first few days. You may have discomfort in your arms and back which will also be relieved with a heating pad and pain medication.

Bruising – Some bruising is possible after breast augmentation but substantial bruising is uncommon. If any bruising exists, this should disappear within 7–10 days after the surgery. Note, however, that if one breast gets larger or very bruised after surgery, this may indicate a hematoma (bleeding) in or around the pocket.

Settling – Implants do not settle. They cannot move from where they are placed. Settling is an optical illusion seen after sub-pectoral placement and is due to the atrophying (partial death) of the overlying muscle. As the muscle atrophies, it makes it seem like the implant is descending.

Nipple sensation – This will vary. Usually the nipple sensation is normal immediately after surgery, but the nipples may be very sensitive or numb at times. Numbness is not common, and only a very small percentage of patients have permanent nipple numbness.
