Dr. Bellin uses three different incision locations to place breast implants. He will discuss what kind of incision is best for you, depending on your body type, and concerns about scarring and other risks.
In the breast fold (inframammary fold) – This is Dr. Bellin’s preference since it hides your scar well even if it should thicken. It is the most commonly used incision because it provides the easiest and safest approach for the surgeon, and gives the surgeon the greatest control over the position of the implant. Dr. Bellin is able to do your surgery through an incision measuring slightly more than one inch.
Around the nipple (peri-areolar) – This incision often leaves a very thin scar that blends well with the areola. But if a thick scar forms, it can be very obtrusive. Loss of feeling in your nipple is the main risk of utilizing this incision, and may happen up to 50% of the time. It can also interfere with nursing a child.
In the armpit (axilla) – This incision is often used for under-muscle implant placement, but it can also be used for over-muscle placement. Most people are now aware of the implications of a scar in your armpit area. If your scar thickens, raising your arm on the beach or in a low-cut gown will make it obvious that you have breast implants. This incision location also makes correct placement of your implant extremely tricky. Unfortunately, Dr. Bellin has seen many patients with implants placed too high on the chest using this incision, and he does not use it very often.
How do I decide what kind of incision is right for me?
This is a decision that you should make after a thorough discussion with Dr. Bellin. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, if you are more concerned about visible scarring, then you may want to opt for the inframammary fold approach. If not, you may want to choose one of the other two options.
