Questions about Breast Augmentation

Manhattan, New York City, NY

What should happen before I get breast enlargement surgery?

You will need to schedule an breast enlargment consultation with an experienced breast surgeon. Dr. Bellin is your best choice in New York cosmetic surgeons. During this consultation, your surgeon will thoroughly explain the operative procedure, the postoperative course, and the possible risks and complications. You should also be shown many before and after photographs of other patients your surgeon has treated.

Please have a look at our pages on breast augmentation, breast incision options, implant placement options, post–breast augmentation surgery expectations, and issues that breast augmentation can correct.

How old do you have to be to have breast augmentation?

As of May 2000, Federal regulation prohibits breast augmentation for purely aesthetic purposes in women under the age of 18.

Will my insurance pay for my breast augmentation?

No, insurance will not pay for any surgery that is for cosmetic purposes only. However, if you have a physical deformity, or if you have had trauma to the chest which requires repair, or if you are a mastectomy patient, then your insurance will help pay for the costs.

How big should I go when choosing the size of my implants?

Dr. Bellin will be able to give you some advice about what would look good, but it is entirely up to you. Dr. Bellin often tells patients who want a very significant enlargement the he will make them as large as he can and still have them look natural.

Will my breast implants feel natural?

This will depend on several factors. The more natural tissue you have before the operation, the more likely that the implants will feel natural after the operation. It has been said that under-muscle breast implant placement looks more natural than over-muscle placement. This is not true. All cases are different, however. Over-muscle implants actually move more naturally than under-muscle implants, which can elevate when what is left of the pectoralis muscle is used.

Can a woman breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Most women who have had breast augmentation find breastfeeding with implants to be no more difficult than breastfeeding without them. Actually, some women who have breastfed with and without implants claim that breastfeeding with implants is easier.

When the first reports or problems with silicone implants were released in the early 1990s, there was concern that breastfeeding with silicone implants could endanger the child. Studies have found no evidence that this is the case. Silicone molecules are too large to pass into the milk ducts and therefore cannot reach the child. And in any event they are harmless.

Because the implant is placed in a pocket under all of the breast tissue, the milk ducts that bring milk from the lobes and lobules of the breast to the nipple are usually not disturbed or cut during the surgery.

If you are considering breast augmentation surgery please contact CosMedica today to arrange your free breast enlargement consultation. If you have firmer silicone implants or overfilled saline implants, your breasts will feel firmer than natural breasts.

The amount that a saline breast implant is filled makes a big difference. Too little volume will give you ripples, but too much volume can cause firmness and rippling. Some say that saline implants feel less natural than silicone implants.

The surface texture of the implant makes a difference as well. Implants with a smooth surface are thinner than implants with a textured surface. Although the difference is very slight, patients who have had both often report that they can feel a difference.
