Liposuction

There are several different ways to achieve attractive liposuction (cosmetic surgical removal of local fat deposits) results, and different surgeons will recommend different methods, based on their experience. This is true for liposuction as well as every other cosmetic surgery procedure. Not all liposuction surgeries are the same.

Therefore, for most of his patients Dr. Bellin wishes to explain his method of liposuction which he believes is superior to the other techniques used for liposuction. This technique is one that Dr. Bellin has developed himself and has successfully used for over fifteen years.

As you may have read, most cosmetic surgeons perform liposuction while you are under total anesthesia. However, performing it that way can often deliver inaccurate results, in spite of the ability of your surgeon. Having a surgeon perform your liposuction surgery while you are lying unconscious on the operating table cannot possibly achieve the same accuracy that Dr. Bellin can using his technique. This is because while you are lying on the operating table, your fatty areas are falling away and blending into the rest of your body. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, for a surgeon to accurately remove your fat deposits since he or she can’t view them from the proper angle.

The accuracy of your liposuction results is extremely important, because if too much fat is removed, you will be left with irregularities such as waviness, rippling, depressions, or dimpling of your skin. If that occurred, your problem would most likely be permanent.  At best, you would require a second surgery to correct your imperfections which resulted from your previous procedure.

Normally, if too much fat is removed, fat injections are used after your liposuction surgery to fill in your deformed areas.  However, many surgeons now think that your injected fat eventually dissolves.  If this happens, it leaves your deformity obviously noticeable. (Dr. Bellin believes that survival of your fat from such injections depends on which method is used.) However, if not enough fat is removed, your surgical procedure must be performed over again.

For these reasons, Dr. Bellin has developed a highly accurate technique of performing liposuction surgery where you are under local anesthesia so that you can stand up many times during your procedure and Dr. Bellin can evaluate you. (Obviously, you cannot stand up if you are under general anesthesia.) When your fat is removed, your skin shrinks back right away. Therefore, Dr. Bellin can make surgical decisions about how much more of your fat to remove and whether your skin appears smoother.

Dr. Bellin’s technique works the following way.

  • Dr. Bellin provides you with intravenous tranquilizers which sedate you enough to put you in a semiconscious state in which you don’t know everything that is happening, but you are perfectly safe.
  • Local anesthesia numbs your areas where fatty deposits are to be surgically removed.
  • About ½ hour passes while your local anesthetic becomes fully effective. Also, your tranquilizers wear off so you are fully able stand up for your evaluation when needed.
  • Dr. Bellin cuts a small incision near the first of your fatty deposits. After about half of your liposuction procedure is performed, Dr. Bellin will ask you to get up so he can assess you. He can see precisely how much of your fat has been removed from each of your fatty areas and how much more he must remove to achieve optimum results. As noted above, your skin contracts immediately so that Dr. Bellin can make accurate decisions about your fat removal.
  • You will then lie down again so he can remove a bit more of your fat if necessary.
  • Your fatty area outlines are drawn using a special temporary skin marker as you stand up.
  • You will lie down again for more suctioning.

This process is repeated several times:  you stand up for assessment, and then you lie down for more suction. Dr. Bellin removes little bits of your fat each time, very carefully, until you look just the way you discussed with him in your consultation. Using this technique, your risk is slim to none that too much of your fat will be removed or that some of your fat will be left behind.

Sometimes a last bit of minor modification is done while you are standing up. All of your fatty deposits which are getting liposuction are treated in the same way. After your surgery, you will be handed a mirror to view the results of your liposuction procedure. Long before you experience any swelling, both you and Dr. Bellin can see the precise results. You may even mention to Dr. Bellin any other minor changes you wish to see done. This rarely happens, however, because Dr. Bellin’s nurse and Dr. Bellin himself, both have sharp eyes for every detail of your fat removal procedure. Dr. Bellin does not distort his view of your fatty tissue by filling it with fluid like some other plastic surgeons do, so he can see exactly what he is doing at all times. Dr. Bellin’s unique technique is actual body sculpting!

After your liposuction procedure, Dr. Bellin takes photos of you with a Polaroid camera while you are standing up. When you return to our office a week later and you want to see how much swelling you have, Dr. Bellin shows you your Polaroid. This way you feel comfortable with your surgical results during your postsurgical recuperation period even though you can’t tell what you look like yet. You do not worry in the following weeks that Dr. Bellin didn’t remove enough of your fat. The results you see in your photo are what you will get!

Since Dr. Bellin uses local anesthesia which has epinephrine in it to constrict your blood vessels, you will experience very little bleeding and your soreness will be delayed several hours (just as with the tumescent technique used by other surgeons).

Dr. Bellin has had spectacular success using his technique and it is safe and effective. He has performed over 1500 liposuction procedures during his career. He has had to redo liposuction for only slight modification on just three of his patients.

Dr. Bellin has developed a truly unique and original technique for performing liposuction surgery—accurate, precision, body sculpting!

Whatever method of liposuction your doctor employs, if your surgeon has a great deal of experience with his or her technique, chances are you will be very happy with your results.
