Liposuction

Manhattan, New York City, New York

Despite their best efforts at physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle, many people are stuck with disproportionate body contours due to localized fat deposits. These trouble areas are often due to genetics rather than a lack of weight control or fitness. Fortunately, such people have liposuction as an option. Liposuction is a procedure that slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion, and ultimately, enhancing your self–image.

It is important to note that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Furthermore, it is not an effective treatment for loose saggy skin, or cellulite – the dimpled skin that typically appears on the hips, thighs, and buttocks.

Dr. Bellin´s technique

The vast majority of practitioners perform liposuction with the patient under total anesthesia. The problem is that while a patient is lying asleep on an operating table, the fatty areas blend into the rest of the body, making the decisions necessary for an accurate removal of fat very difficult.

Dr. Bellin has developed a highly accurate method of doing liposuction under local anesthesia so that the patient can stand up several times during the procedure and be evaluated, because the skin shrinks immediately when the fat is removed, so he can tell exactly what is being achieved. Accuracy is key because if too much fat is removed from an area, it will create deformities such as waviness, rippling, depressions, or dimpling of the skin. If some is left behind, another operation is needed. Redo rates for many surgeons using the conventional (or tumescent) method are in the 20% range or more.

There is not much pain afterwards with this method. Patients often have the surgery on Friday and go back to work on Monday.

Dr. Bellin has had almost universal success with this method and it is perfectly safe. After having done almost 2000 liposuction operations, only seven of those patients required a follow-up surgery for minor corrections, not the 400 that others might experience.

Tumescent liposuction

The disadvantages of tumescent liposuction are several. As mentioned, it is much less accurate than Dr. Bellin´s method, necessitating far more touch-ups. The fluid that is injected with this technique distorts the tissue during the operation, making judgments more difficult. Post-operatively, there is also leakage of the fluid that often necessitates sleeping on a plastic sheet of a week. There is also more pain after the surgery, as Dr. Bellin uses concentrated local anesthesia that breaks the pain cycle.

Ideal candidates for liposuction

Liposuction is a good choice to enhance your physique, but not to completely transform it. A thorough understanding of the procedure will help you form realistic expectations. The best liposuction candidates are emotionally well-adjusted, in good general health, have a history of physical activity, and eat a healthy diet. Your consultation with Dr. Bellin will help ensure that your goals are realistic and healthy.
