Otoplasty

NYC, New York and Manhattan

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is commonly performed to set prominent ears closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. Children with prominent ears, often referred to as “bat ears” or “Dumbo ears”, are most at-risk for being ridiculed for this condition. A child’s ears are almost fully developed by age six, and are easily the most visible feature on their small face. If they stick out, your child can be taunted unmercifully by his or her peers.

We believe the best time to perform this procedure is before your child begins school. However, it could be performed at any time thereafter. Ear improvement is very popular among adults as well.

The surgery

Dr. Bellin makes a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. He will then sculpt the cartilage and bend it back toward the head. Non-removable stitches may be used to help maintain the new shape. Occasionally, he will remove a larger piece of cartilage to provide a more natural-looking fold when the surgery is complete.

Another technique involves a similar incision in the back of the ear. Skin is removed and stitches are used to fold the cartilage back on itself to reshape the ear without removing cartilage. Read more about Post Otoplasty Expectations.

In most cases, the surgery will leave a faint scar in the back of the ear that will fade in time. Surgery is typically performed on both ears for a better balance, even when only one ear appears to protrude. The procedure usually takes about two to three hours, depending on the extent of the condition and which surgical technique is necessary. The head will be wrapped for about one week after the surgery, and wearing a stocking cap to bed for several weeks will be advised.

If your child is young, Dr. Bellin may recommend general anesthesia, so the child will sleep through the operation. For older children or adults, he may prefer to use local anesthesia combined with a sedative, so you or your child will be awake but relaxed.
