Rhinoplasty and Computer Imaging

New York City, Manhattan, New York

Patients often come to CosMedica asking to see exactly what their nose and face will look like after having rhinoplasty, or cosmetic nose surgery. Other surgeons provide computer imaging to answer this request, giving the patient a preview of what to expect.

Concerns About Computer Imaging and Rhinoplasty

New York City nose surgeon Dr. Bellin and his staff generally do not use computer imaging because there are some very real concerns with the concept:

  • Computer imaging can be incorrectly used as a “sales tool.”
  • Rhinoplasty involves a large amount of variable factors that cannot be captured by computer imaging, due to the complex nature of rhinoplasty.
  • Because of that, computer imaging can almost never portray a truly precise picture of a patient’s face after surgery. It can give you a general idea, but cannot predict a certain outcome.
  • Patients who view computer images of promised “after” effects can easily be set up for false expectations and disappointment.

One Exception for Computer Imaging

There is one exception to our objection to computer imaging, and that is when a patient is requesting a smaller nose. In this instance, computer imaging can be an educational tool and is typically far more accurate.

Computer imaging is more accurate in these situations because the procedure to reduce the size of someone’s nose yields very predictable outcomes under the hands of a skilled rhinoplasty surgeon. In addition, using computer imaging to reduce the size of your nose in very small increments allows you and Dr. Bellin to work together to communicate effectively about the end result of your procedure.

Achieving your Desired Cosmetic Result Without Computer Imaging

Dr. Bellin and his staff will work meticulously to ensure that you have realistic, solid expectations and that you will be satisfied with the results. We do this by:

  • Offering a free nose surgery consultation for every patient.
  • Discussing at length your aesthetic desires for your surgery and whether or not it is achievable.
  • Never moving forward with surgery until you are absolutely certain, and both you and Dr. Bellin are in agreement about the goal of your surgery.
