Nose Irregularities

New York City, Manhattan, New York

There are several nose irregularities and deformities that can be vastly improved with a rhinoplasty. It is common to have many separate problems fixed during your nasal surgery. In some cases, your chin or other facial features may also need work to balance out and optimize your appearance. Below are some common nose deformities and how they are treated.

Big nose

This is by far the most common malformation. Dr. Bellin will begin by removing excess bone and cartilage along the top of your nose. He will then reshape your framework, either by straightening it or by giving it a slight curvature, depending on your desire. Noses that are straight along the top usually look more natural.

There are physical limits as to how small your reshaped nose can be made. If too much cartilage is removed above your nose tip, scar tissue may heap up, more often than not resulting in a “parrot beak” deformity. Dr. Bellin knows how to avoid this.

Bump on your nose

In many cases, only part of the nose is too prominent. If an unattractive bump is bothering your otherwise normal-looking nose, it can be filed down or shaved to create a smoother and straighter nose line.

Upper or bony section of your nose is too wide

The upper part of your nose is made out of bone and offers no flexibility. If this area of your face is too broad, it can be slimmed down by cutting the bones so they can then be moved closer together to give your nose a more narrow-looking appearance.

Your bones must be moved equally or your nose will end up looking crooked. If your bone is not cut close to your cheek, an unattractive “step” will arise on the side of your nose. Dr. Bellin knows how to avoid these undesirable results.

Crooked nose

You may have inherited a crooked nose, or it may have been the result of a fracture. Either way, the surgery mentioned above (upper or bony section of your nose is too wide) will reposition it quite effectively.
However, if the lower cartilaginous portion of your nose is crooked (the part of your nose that you can wiggle), straightening it can be very difficult, if not impossible. The best chance of straightening your nose in this situation is to take a strip of cartilage from the inside of your nose and then to graft it along the indented portion of your nose. The procedure is most often successful, making your nose appear completely centered.
