How does hair react to stress?
The hair follicle responds to stress with reduced growth or even a stop in growth. You can notice this from hair loss 3 to 4 months after a stressful event. The hair can come off in strands, often with a white tip at the end. Usually, when the cause of the stress disappears, the hair loss disappears and hair growth recovers in the course of 8 to 12 months. Sometimes, however, the hair loss lasts much longer and can take years.
Cortisol, is a hormone made by the adrenal gland. It is to prepare the body for sudden actions. Cortisol is released in danger or threatening situations. The heart rate goes up, energy is released by burning fat and producing proteins. The body is ready for action! However, it is not intended to be in this situation for a long time. Long-term high cortisol levels are harmful for the body but also for your hair.
Cortisol is a stress hormone and interacts with other hormones such as adrenaline and testosterone. An increased level of cortisol causes an increase in adrenaline and testosterone but especially dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The interaction between all these hormones causes a disruption of insulin, a breakdown of collagen, a decrease in bone density and also: hair loss
If the body is under too much stress, it leads to adrenal exhaustion. This makes you feel weak, anxious, depressed and unable to concentrate properly. This can occur in men and women. But the effect on DHT in men is greater. It is precisely the DHT that, when increased, has an effect on the hair follicles. Growth slows down and may even come to a complete standstill, the hair follicles no longer produce hair. Therefore, stress through and increased DHT leads to premature hair loss or even baldness, the latter especially in men.
Prevention is better than cure. When hair loss is caused by stress, it is very difficult to reverse the process.
So pay attention: stress can cause hair loss through the action of hormones. Keep an eye on your lifestyle and find the right balance in work and relaxation and pay attention to healthy nutrition.
